Coffee with a Cop: The Pursuit to be Approachable

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what I was walking in to when attending “Coffee with a Cop” at Chick-fil-A this past Wednesday. It turns out that I had nothing to worry about because the Westfield community has some of the most involved and approachable police officers I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Handshakes, smiles, and in-depth conversations amongst the group are what I noticed, and I immediately felt comfortable. One of the missions of this event is to break down the barrier between the community and the Westfield police officers.

Sergeant Billy Adams started the “Coffee with a Cop” program about a year ago and it’s been an on-going program ever since. He wants the Westfield community to have the chance to meet the officers that serve and protect us day-in and day-out, without having that hesitation or feeling that the police are unapproachable. Sergeant Adams is accomplishing this feat but would still like to see more faces show up at these events.

With my coffee and chicken biscuit in-hand, I was able to meet the officers in attendance and learn about some of the great things they’re accomplishing. The WPD has a “Vacation Security Check” program (link below) where they check on your residence while you’re out-of-town. Not only do they check on your home while you’re away, but they walk the perimeter and make sure all of your windows and doors are locked. They’ve even found such things like plumbing issues and prevented some major damage happening to some folks’ properties. How cool is that?!

Westfield is where I live, work, and play. Knowing that all these officers are working for our Westfield Police Department, makes me feel safe and proud. I applaud Sergeant Adams and all the rest of the WPD for their efforts and involvement. I recommend that you take the time to thank our WPD officers by attending one of these meetings, and help break down the barrier while also learning a thing or two along the way.
